Hawk Hurst has been making, playing, and teaching others to create Native American-style flutes and drums for nearly two decades. Originally self-taught, he considers himself very fortunate to have studied with some of the finest flute makers & players across the country. His percussion skills were greatly enhanced under the tutelage of (the late) Master Drummer, Babatunde Olatunji, of the Yoruba tribe of Nigeria, and his good friend, Snowbear Taylor. In addition to his love of music, Hawk is a professional storyteller and naturalist. An eight time recording artist and a published author, he has taught and performed at numerous schools, camps, museums, and festivals across the country. He and his wife, Ayal, currently reside in Charleston, South Carolina, where they own and operate Merhaven Bed no Breakfast. Hawk offers private lessons in both making and playing flutes and drums.
