"ROOTS OF TIME"
by Hawk Hurst Available in CD - $9.99.
Artfully integrating a variety of sound textures from traditions around the globe this anthology, while at once relaxing and sublime, is full of life and energy. Weaving the rich, sweet sound of: the Native American flute and didgeridoo; haunting, yet melodic songs and chants; the heart string pull of the gopichan and blik kitaar; all deeply rooted and intertwined in the ancient tribal rhythms of the djembe, dun-dun, udu, tun-cul, bohdran, and pow-wow drums. Designed to uplift your spirit, relax your mind, ease your emotions, and empower your body, Roots of Time will leave you wanting more. Perfect for classrooms, yoga, meditation, and easy listening.
This CD is enhanced with a video clip of Hawk sharing the Cherokee Legend of the First Flute filmed by The Charleston Museum, a flute making slideshow for educators, and links to Hawk’s website.
Review by Terry Rollins for the December, 2007 Journal of Tar Heel Tellers
“Roots of Time opens with a lively, energetic original piece called, "Ray of Light". If there were no other song on the album, except this one, the album would still be worth purchasing. What a happy song it is! I find, "Ray of Light", to be a great song to play as I drive to performances, or clean the boat, or play in my headset as I take a walk. It's a song that will make you smile. Another favorite, again an original piece, is, "Battery Blues". When I first heard it, I imagined an approaching storm on the plains of Africa or in the Desert Southwest, but when I read its title and realized that Hawk was playing a tune about Charleston's famous Battery, new images filled my mind. Having been to the historic Charleston landmark and felt the wind and mist on my face, I was reminded of approaching hurricanes or perhaps memories of the early days of the Civil War. The powerful sounds of the Irish bohdran make this one of the most dramatic songs on the album. Other selections feature the haunting sounds of flutes, the steady rhythm of drums, and the high-pitch ringing of chimes and bells. There are sacred songs and chants, as well as tribal dance melodies. And, when vocals are heard, Hawk's voice is clear and strong. In addition to the 16 songs on the CD, this album is also enhanced with a short DVD that features Hawk telling his original story, The Legend of the First Flute. As the album cover says, Roots of Time is, "designed to uplift your spirit, relax your mind, ease your emotions, and empower your body". I say that it succeeds on all accounts. I hope you'll purchase a copy for yourself and a friend!”
Review by Bob Linsenmayer The Singing Storyteller
“Every elementary, middle school and high school music teacher should have a copy Hawk Hurst’s “Roots of Time” to introduce his or her students to highly skilled Native American flute playing, West African drumming and singing, and to other world musical forms. Students can drum, dance and sing along with the traditional and original selections. But this CD is not only educational, but also provides a pleasurable listening experience. The melodies and rhythms are soothing as you sit back, clear your mind, and feel the stress in your body dissipate. In addition, "Roots of Time" will get a lot of play at our house as background music when we have guests over for dinner.”
